The Federal Government has reviewed the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) and has made some new ruling changes. These changes no longer allow users to unlock their phones. It is now illegal to unlock your phone.

Unlocking a phone is a method to allow your phone to work with a different carrier’s network. The ruling is for phones provided by the carriers and already locked. Users are still able to purchase unlocked phones, however, they cost more. Phones previously unlocked are exempt from this new ruling.

Unlocking of phones has flip-flopped between legal and illegal. The DMCA regulations will be reviewed again in 2015. We will wait to see if in 2015 the rules change once again. Until then, we are in an illegal status for unlocking your phones.
